Bonhams Edinburgh Dog Sale Offers Works from Charlie Watts Collection
Bonhams will present a dedicated Dog Sale in Edinburgh featuring paintings by Eugène Verboeckhoven, Robert Alexander RSA RSW, John Emms, Arthur Wardle RI, Maud Earl, John Sargent Noble RBA and Morgan Dennis. The auction includes a King Charles Spaniel portrait by Verboeckhoven estimated at £15,000–20,000, Robert Alexander's A proud mother estimated at £4,000–6,000 that was previously in the Charlie Watts collection, and A. P. B.'s Dandie Dinmont Terrier Ginger III estimated at £3,000–5,000. Additional lots carry estimates from £700–1,000 to £8,000–12,000 and come from private collectors including several works formerly owned by the Rolling Stones drummer.
The Signal
The sale continues Bonhams' 30-year tradition of specialist dog auctions held in New York, London and Edinburgh, drawing international collectors and demonstrating sustained demand for 19th- to 21st-century canine subjects across breeds. Works once owned by Watts, a patron of the Forever Hounds Trust who kept nine collies, highlight the crossover between celebrity provenance and traditional sporting art, offering buyers clear signals on secondary-market pricing for established names such as Verboeckhoven and Earl.
