Bonhams New York to Auction 31 Works by Royal Canine Painter Reuben Ward Binks
Bonhams New York will offer 31 paintings by Reuben Ward Binks (1880-1950), the British artist known for his canine portraits for the British royal family, in its Dogs in Show & Field: The Fine Art Sale on February 15, 2012. The works carry pre-sale estimates ranging from $400 to $3,000, with a combined estimate of more than $21,000. Highlights include a painting of King George V's Clumber spaniels at Sandringham ($1,200-1,800) and a black retriever with a duck ($1,000-1,500). Sam Travers of Bonhams 19th Century Pictures department noted Binks' technical skill and his status as a sought-after canine artist.
The Signal
The sale underscores the enduring market for sporting and animal art with royal provenance. Binks' commissions from Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, and George VI, along with a 1930 gift of a Van Dyck portrait from George V, add historical cachet to works that remain accessible to a broad range of collectors. The auction also features dog paintings by Arthur Wardle, Cecil Aldin, and others, indicating sustained interest in the genre.
