CAAM Acquires Works by Bellamy and Lee at Frieze Los Angeles 2026
The Facts
The California African American Museum (CAAM) acquired two works at Frieze Los Angeles for its permanent collection through the CAAM Acquisition Fund. Executive Director Cameron Shaw and collector V. Joy Simmons selected a painting by Jessica Taylor Bellamy, presented by Anat Ebgi, and a wall-based sculpture by Zenobia Lee, presented by Sea View. Frieze Los Angeles took place 26 February – 1 March 2026 at Santa Monica Airport.
The Signal
The acquisitions highlight CAAM's commitment to supporting emerging Black artists in Los Angeles, a focus the museum has maintained for nearly 50 years. Shaw noted the works are both beautiful and conceptually rigorous, offering contemplation while stressing action. The purchases signal CAAM's strategic investment in LA-based artists whose practices engage with history, environment, and community resilience, reinforcing the museum's role as a collector of regional narratives.
