Born in London, Alexander McQueen began his career as an apprentice on Savile Row before attending Central Saint Martins. He quickly gained a reputation for his provocative designs and theatrical presentations, establishing his own fashion house in 1992 and later leading the creative direction at Givenchy.
His work is characterized by a fusion of traditional British tailoring with dark, romantic, and often surrealist themes. He frequently utilized unconventional materials and complex silhouettes, pushing the boundaries of contemporary fashion through both his runway spectacles and his highly structured garments.
McQueen received significant critical acclaim during his lifetime, including four British Designer of the Year awards and the Council of Fashion Designers of America International Designer of the Year award in 2003. His legacy continues to be a focal point in major cultural institutions and museum collections dedicated to the history of fashion.
