Born in Havana, Cuba, Carlos Garaicoa emerged as a significant figure in the Cuban art scene during the 1990s. His practice developed in the wake of the artistic shifts following the 1980s, establishing him as a key voice in contemporary Cuban art through his analytical approach to the built environment.
Garaicoa’s work frequently utilizes architectural models, photography, and site-specific installations to interrogate the relationship between urban spaces and historical memory. By applying post-modernist theory to the decaying infrastructure of his home city, he connects aesthetic form with deep-seated social commentary.
He continues to maintain a robust international presence, with recent activity including a joint studio exhibition in Madrid alongside Cildo Meireles, curated by Bartomeu Marí in early 2026. His work remains a staple of global contemporary art discourse, frequently represented through major galleries such as Galleria Continua.
