Carrie Yamaoka is an American visual artist of Japanese descent whose practice spans multiple disciplines. She gained recognition for her contributions to the New York-based queer art collective fierce pussy, which she co-founded in the early 1990s to address issues of visibility and activism within the LGBTQ+ community.
Her individual work often engages with the physical properties of materials, frequently utilizing resin, Mylar, and photographic processes to investigate themes of perception, reflection, and the nature of the image. Her practice is characterized by a focus on the tactile and the ephemeral, often challenging the viewer's relationship to the surface of the artwork.
Yamaoka continues to be active in the contemporary art scene, with recent recognition including her participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale as part of the collective project arms ache avid aeon: Chapter Nine.
