Artist Profile

David Lamelas

David Lamelas is a pioneering figure in Conceptual art known for his experimental films, sculptures, and site-specific installations that explore the relationship between time, space, and media.

Biography

Born in Buenos Aires, David Lamelas emerged as a central figure in the Argentine avant-garde scene during the 1960s. He gained early international attention for his participation in the 1968 Venice Biennale, where his installation Office of Information about the Vietnam War at Three Levels: The Visual Image, Text, and Audio established his reputation as a key innovator in conceptual practice.

His work frequently utilizes film, photography, and sculptural elements to deconstruct narrative structures and the perception of time. Lamelas often employs a minimalist aesthetic to examine how information is transmitted and how physical environments influence the viewer's experience of reality.

Lamelas continues to receive significant institutional recognition, including a major 2025 survey at Dia Chelsea titled The Machine. This exhibition highlights his six-decade career through a comprehensive presentation of his films, performance-based works, and non-linear gallery installations.
