Biography

Born in Leiden in 1635, Frans van Mieris the Elder was a student of Gerrit Dou, the most famous pupil of Rembrandt. He established himself as a master of the Leiden school, gaining significant patronage from figures such as Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria and Cosimo III de' Medici.

His work is characterized by an extraordinary attention to detail, often depicting domestic interiors, elegant figures, and the textures of luxury materials like silk, velvet, and metal. He frequently employed a small scale, focusing on refined compositions that showcased his technical precision.

The artist founded a dynasty of painters, with his sons Jan and Willem, and his grandson Frans van Mieris the Younger, continuing his legacy in the genre tradition. His influence on the development of Dutch genre painting remains a subject of study in art history.
