Born in the Kingdom of Croatia, Juraj Julije Klović moved to Italy as a young man, where he developed his skills under the influence of the Venetian school and the works of Michelangelo. He became a central figure in the artistic circles of the 16th century, serving prominent patrons including the Farnese family.

Clovio specialized in intricate miniature paintings and manuscript illuminations, characterized by a sophisticated synthesis of High Renaissance monumentality and delicate detail.
