Born in the Middle Rhine region of Germany, Hans Memling moved to the Netherlands during his formative years to apprentice in the Brussels workshop of Rogier van der Weyden. He eventually settled in Bruges, where he was granted citizenship in 1465 and established himself as a leading master of the Early Netherlandish tradition.

Memling is recognized for his mastery of oil painting, characterized by serene compositions and meticulous attention to detail. His body of work frequently features religious iconography integrated with portraits of his patrons, including clergymen, aristocrats, and wealthy burghers, reflecting his status as one of the most successful artists in the city.
