Born Hovhannes Aivazian to an Armenian family in the Crimean port city of Feodosia, Aivazovsky studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. His early talent for capturing the movement and light of water led to his appointment as the official painter of the Russian Navy, a role that allowed him to travel extensively and refine his technical approach to maritime subjects.
Aivazovsky is distinguished by his prolific output, having created thousands of paintings throughout his career. His signature style often features intense, luminous color palettes and a masterful command of light, particularly in his depictions of storms, shipwrecks, and calm coastal vistas. His work remains a staple of 19th-century European art auctions, frequently appearing in major sales alongside other masters of the period.
His legacy continues to be recognized in the international art market, with his works appearing in high-profile auctions in cities such as Paris and London. Recent market activity highlights the enduring demand for his seascapes, which remain highly sought after by collectors of 19th-century European painting.
