Biography

Born in Nancy, France, Jacques Majorelle was the son of the renowned Art Nouveau furniture designer Louis Majorelle. He received his formal artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy before continuing his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris under the tutelage of painters Schommer and Royer.

Majorelle established himself as a significant figure in Orientalist painting, capturing the light and landscapes of North Africa. His artistic legacy is inextricably linked to his architectural and horticultural work in Morocco, where he designed a villa and an expansive garden that served as his studio and residence for decades.

The Majorelle Garden remains a major cultural landmark in Marrakesh, celebrated for its vibrant color palette and diverse collection of exotic plants. The specific shade of intense blue used throughout the property, known as Majorelle Blue, continues to be recognized as a signature element of his aesthetic contribution.
