Biography

Born in London, Joseph Mallord William Turner was a prolific English Romantic painter, printmaker, and watercolourist. He achieved early recognition for his technical skill and eventually elevated the status of landscape painting to rival that of history painting, a shift supported by the influential critic John Ruskin.

Turner is best known for his mastery of light and atmosphere, often depicting dramatic natural phenomena and violent seascapes. His vast body of work includes over 550 oil paintings and thousands of watercolours and works on paper, characterized by an evolving style that moved toward increasingly abstract representations of light and motion.

Today, Turner remains a central figure in British art history, with his legacy frequently revisited in major institutional exhibitions. Recent programming at Tate Britain, including the 2025–2026 exhibition Turner and Constable: Rivals and Originals, continues to draw significant public interest and record attendance, highlighting his enduring influence on the landscape tradition.
