Born in Philadelphia, Laraaji began his career as a stand-up comedian and actor before transitioning to music in the 1970s. He gained significant international recognition after being discovered by Brian Eno while performing in a New York City park, leading to his inclusion in the influential Ambient series.

His practice centers on the use of the hammered dulcimer and electric zither, often modified to create expansive, meditative soundscapes.
