Artist Profile

Liliana Porter

Liliana Porter is a multidisciplinary Argentine artist known for her conceptual explorations of time, memory, and reality through the use of kitsch objects and miniature figurines. Her work spans photography, printmaking, installation, and theater, often blurring the lines between the representational and the actual.

Biography

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Liliana Porter studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in her home city and later at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. She gained early recognition in the 1960s as a co-founder of the New York Graphic Workshop, which played a significant role in the development of conceptual printmaking in the Americas.

Porter’s practice is characterized by the juxtaposition of mass-produced trinkets and found objects, which she arranges in theatrical, often humorous, or melancholic vignettes. Through these installations, she investigates the nature of representation and the philosophical implications of the objects we collect and discard.

Her work continues to be widely exhibited internationally, reflecting a career that bridges the gap between traditional fine art media and contemporary performance. She remains a prominent figure in the Latin American conceptual art movement, with her practice consistently evolving to incorporate video and public art projects.
