Born in Kronach, Germany, Lucas Cranach the Elder rose to prominence as the court painter to the Electors of Saxony in Wittenberg. His career was deeply intertwined with the intellectual and religious shifts of the 16th century, as he became a close associate of Martin Luther and a key figure in the visual dissemination of Reformation ideals.
Cranach is celebrated for his distinctively slender, elegant figures and his mastery of both religious altarpieces and secular portraiture. His workshop, which was later managed by his son Lucas Cranach the Younger, produced a vast output of paintings and woodcuts that combined traditional craftsmanship with the evolving aesthetic sensibilities of the Northern Renaissance.
