Biography

Mark Leckey is a British contemporary artist born in Birkenhead, England. He studied at Newcastle Polytechnic and later at the Royal College of Art in London. His breakthrough came with the video Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore (1999), a collage of club and dance footage that established his signature approach to found imagery and pop culture.

Leckey's work often explores themes of nostalgia, anxiety, and the emotional resonance of consumer objects and media. He works across video, sculpture, and sound, frequently recontextualizing everyday artifacts. His video Industrial Light and Magic (2008) won the Turner Prize that year, cementing his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary British art.

Leckey's work continues to be exhibited internationally. In 2026, his work is included in the group exhibition 'The 90s: Art and Fashion' at Tate Britain, which surveys the art, photography, and fashion of the 1990s alongside other Young British Artists.
