Michel Majerus was a Luxembourgish artist known for his large-scale, immersive installations that synthesized traditional painting with digital imagery, pop culture, and advertising aesthetics.
Born in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg, Michel Majerus studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. He became a prominent figure in the Berlin art scene during the 1990s, where he developed a distinctive practice that challenged the boundaries of contemporary painting.
His work frequently incorporated motifs from video games, graphic design, and art history, often presented on monumental canvases or within complex, site-specific architectural environments. By layering digital aesthetics with painterly gestures, he explored the saturation of visual information in the late 20th century.
Majerus maintained a prolific output until his death in 2002. His influence persists through posthumous retrospectives and the continued study of his approach to the integration of digital media into the fine art canon.
