Born in Paris, Nicolas de Largillière spent his formative years in Antwerp, where he was influenced by the Flemish tradition of painting. He later returned to France, establishing himself as a leading portraitist during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV.
His work is characterized by a sophisticated use of color and a focus on the textures of fabrics and materials, often capturing the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie of his time. He served as the director of the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture between 1733 and 1735.
Largillière remains a significant figure in the study of European Old Masters. His portraits continue to appear in major international auction houses, reflecting his enduring legacy in the history of French portraiture.
