Biography

Born in Los Angeles, Paul R. Williams overcame systemic racial barriers to become one of the most prominent architects of the 20th century. After studying at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design and the Los Angeles branch of the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, he became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects in 1923.

Williams developed a signature style that blended various historical revival aesthetics, including Georgian, Tudor, and French Regency, tailored to the luxury residential market. His portfolio includes the residences of high-profile figures such as Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, and Desi Arnaz, as well as significant public projects that shaped the landscape of Southern California.
