Pedro Reyes is a Mexican artist known for his multidisciplinary practice that spans sculpture, architecture, and performance, often focusing on social and collective agency. He is particularly recognized for his 'social sculptures' and his recent transition into traditional stone carving using volcanic rock and Mesoamerican motifs.
Born in Mexico, Pedro Reyes has established an international career defined by a diverse practice that integrates sculpture, architecture, video, and performance. His work is frequently characterized by a commitment to social, environmental, and educational themes, aiming to foster individual and collective participation through art.
While initially recognized for his conceptual social sculptures, Reyes has recently shifted his focus toward traditional stone carving at his studio in Coyoacán. His current practice utilizes local volcanic stone and incorporates Nahuatl pictograms, drawing aesthetic influence from Mesoamerican history as well as the modernist legacies of Constantin Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi.
Reyes continues to maintain a significant global presence, represented by Lisson Gallery. His work is slated for inclusion in the inaugural installation at LACMA’s new David Geffen Galleries and is featured in recent acquisitions for the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. His ongoing projects, such as the DISARM series, remain central to his exhibition programming.
