Born in Toronto, Canada, to Jamaican parents, Tau Lewis developed a practice rooted in the transformation of discarded materials. Her work often engages with themes of memory, identity, and the reclamation of history through the physical labor of sewing, carving, and assembling found objects.
Lewis's sculptures frequently incorporate textiles, leather, and salvaged industrial or organic debris, resulting in layered, tactile forms that evoke both the human figure and ancestral narratives. Her approach is deeply informed by the resourcefulness found in the artistic traditions of the Southern United States and the African diaspora.
The artist continues to gain international recognition for her contributions to contemporary sculpture. She is featured in the 2026 exhibition New Humans: Memories of the Future at the New Museum in New York, which explores the evolving intersection of technology and human identity.
