Getty Museum Acquires Lemmen Pointillist Portrait and Balke Norwegian Seascape
The Facts
On August 5, 2026, the Getty Museum announced the acquisition and installation of two newly acquired paintings in its West Pavilion galleries: Young Woman Crocheting (Julie Lemmen) by Belgian Neo-Impressionist Georges Lemmen, and North Cape by Norwegian Romantic painter Peder Balke. The Lemmen portrait, executed in pointillist technique, is the museum's first work by the artist and its first pointillist painting, filling a major gap in its 19th-century holdings. It was exhibited at Les XX in Brussels and the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1891, and emerged from a private collection in Florida for auction in New York in 2025. The Balke seascape, depicting Norway's North Cape, remained with the artist's descendants until it appeared on the market in Oslo last year and was acquired through Agnews Brussels. Both paintings are on view until the Getty Center's temporary closure for renovations in March 2027.
