Hauser & Wirth and Spike Island Name Joe Lyward as 2026-2027 Engagement Fellow
Hauser & Wirth and Spike Island have selected Joe Lyward as the recipient of the second Engagement Fellowship for South West-based Curators, covering the 2026–2027 period. Lyward will collaborate with teams at Spike Island in Bristol and Hauser & Wirth Somerset to develop and deliver 'Should We Plant a Tree?', a year-long program of events and activities. The initiative invites young people and local underrepresented communities to explore relationships to the future through discussions, field trips, and workshops with artists, culminating in a co-created proposal for a 100-year project. This fellowship is the second of three such opportunities taking place between 2025 and 2028, supported by Hauser & Wirth.
The Signal
The fellowship underscores Hauser & Wirth's ongoing commitment to inclusive learning and professional development in the arts, a focus since 2014. By connecting Spike Island's engagement program with Hauser & Wirth's resources, the initiative aims to support curators, artists, and independent art workers in the South West region. Lyward, a curator based in Penzance with experience at Tate St Ives and other institutions, brings a focus on care, creative ecologies, and community-led projects, signaling a deepening of regional art infrastructure and access.
