The Facts

Hend Samir, an Egyptian-born painter based in the Netherlands, has won the fourteenth edition of the ABN AMRO Art Award, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and ABN AMRO announced on May 27, 2026. The jury praised Samir's virtuosic technique and her ability to weave enigmatic narratives addressing trauma, sexuality, and family relationships. As part of the award, Samir will receive a solo exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam opening March 5, 2027, followed by a presentation at the ABN AMRO Art Space later that year. She will also receive a €10,000 monetary prize, a publication designed by Irma Boom, and the acquisition of a work for the ABN AMRO Art Collection. Samir, born in Cairo in 1986, studied at Helwan University and was a resident at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam; she previously won the Royal Award for Modern Painting in 2021 and has exhibited at venues including Centraal Museum Utrecht and Art Basel Statements.

The Signal

The award, established in 2004 and now in its fourteenth edition, specifically supports emerging female artists in the Netherlands, reflecting a shared mission by ABN AMRO and the Stedelijk Museum to promote gender equality and inclusion in the art sector. Samir's win signals the continued institutional backing of painterly, figurative work that engages with contemporary social themes, a trend that has gained traction in Dutch museums and collections. For collectors, the award's track record—previous winners have seen increased visibility and market interest—suggests Samir's market may strengthen, particularly as her work bridges intimate scale and monumental ambition, a quality that resonates with both private and institutional buyers.
