Kunsthaus Zürich and Bührle Foundation Agree on New Provenance Research Framework
The Facts
The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft and the Foundation E. G. Bührle Collection adopted a set of guidelines on May 26, 2025, outlining the continuation of their collaboration at the Kunsthaus Zürich. The 205 works on long-term loan from the Bührle Foundation will remain accessible to the public, while the Kunsthaus will conduct provenance research over the next five years in accordance with its subsidy agreement. The Bührle Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to seek fair and just solutions in cases of Nazi-confiscated cultural property, following the independent review by Prof. Raphael Gross published in June 2024. Three new exhibition formats will provide deeper historical contextualization of the works.
The Signal
The agreement resolves intense public debate over the Bührle collection's presentation and provenance, establishing a clear institutional framework for research and restitution. By taking direct responsibility for provenance research, the Kunsthaus sets a precedent for museums holding contested collections, balancing public access with historical accountability. The commitment to fair solutions, backed by financial contributions from the foundation, signals a shift toward proactive restitution practices in Switzerland, aligning with international standards such as the Washington Principles and Terezin Declaration.
