Kunsthaus Zürich Announces 2024 Programme with Hodler, Kogelnik, and Visser Shows
The Facts
On October 19, 2023, Kunsthaus Zürich announced its 2024 exhibition programme, which includes a reinterpretation of Swiss icon Ferdinand Hodler, a retrospective of Pop artist Kiki Kogelnik, and an investigation into the origins of Marcel Duchamp's 'Fountain' by Barbara Visser. 'Apropos Hodler' runs March 8–June 30, 2024, and pairs contemporary artists with Hodler's work. 'Kiki Kogelnik. A retrospective' takes place March 22–July 14, 2024, tracing the Austrian artist's evolution from expressionism to Pop Art. 'Barbara Visser. Alreadymade' (February 9–May 12, 2024) explores the theory that Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven authored the iconic readymade. Additional exhibitions include 'Matthew Wong – Vincent van Gogh,' a dialogue across centuries, and projects by Marina Abramović, Walid Raad, and Albert Welti, alongside continued focus on private collections such as the Bührle and Looser collections.
The Signal
The 2024 season reflects Kunsthaus Zürich's strategy of using exhibitions as platforms for critical reassessment, particularly of national narratives and canonical figures. The Hodler show, co-conceived with artists, challenges the artist's long-held status as a 'national artist' by foregrounding progressive and international contexts. The Kogelnik retrospective addresses feminist and technological themes that remain urgent, while Visser's project questions authorship and authenticity—core issues for contemporary collecting. Together, these shows signal a museum committed to forging dialogues between historical and contemporary art, and to engaging with politically charged subjects such as provenance and gender.
