The Facts

The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, the supporting association of Kunsthaus Zürich, elected Anne Keller Dubach as its new president at its 126th general meeting, held by written vote on May 31, 2021. She received 4,308 votes (67.7%), defeating Dr. Florian Schmidt-Gabain, who received 1,648 votes (25.9%). Outgoing president Walter B. Kielholz, who led the association for 19 years, steps down effective June 30, 2021, and was granted honorary membership. The meeting also approved the 2020 annual report and accounts, and a membership fee increase starting in 2022.

The Signal

The association reported a pandemic-related operating loss of CHF –980,952 for 2020, compared to a profit of CHF 3,899 the prior year, despite government compensation for lost revenue. Membership grew to 20,816 from 19,688, while visitor numbers fell to 226,154 from 270,053. The association said it maintains sufficient liquidity to continue operations and fund the opening of the Kunsthaus extension in 2021, and did not apply for COVID-19 loans. Outgoing president Kielholz announced that the search committee, now led by Dubach, will name a successor to director Christoph Becker before summer; Becker will leave the museum in April 2023 after a transition period through 2022.
