Kunsthaus Zürich is presenting a series of artist talks, film screenings, and panel discussions in April and May as part of the second phase of its exhibition 'A Future for the Past. The Bührle Collection: Art, Context, War and Conflict', which opened on November 3, 2023. The program includes a screening of the film 'Art, Context, War and Complicity' on April 4, featuring portraits by Peter Reichenbach, followed by a discussion with former forced laborer Irma Frei and author Yves Demuth. On April 25, artist Miriam Cahn will discuss her plan to buy back her works from the Kunsthaus Collection and the Bührle Collection. A panel on May 2 with artist Thomas Hirschhorn, Dr. Anita Haldemann, and Prof. Angeli Sachs will address remembrance culture in art museums. On May 16, a discussion with Dr. Nikola Doll will explore museums' responsibility regarding looted art, tied to her new book. All events are free and held at the Chipperfield building.
The Signal
The series marks the second phase of the Kunsthaus's ongoing effort to publicly reckon with the Bührle Collection, assembled by arms dealer Emil Bührle, which includes works with contested Nazi-era provenance. By inviting artists, scholars, and a former forced laborer from Bührle's factories, the museum is broadening the debate beyond provenance research to include ethical and historical accountability. The program precedes the release of a final report by historian Prof. Raphael Gross, expected at the end of June 2024, which will inform a third phase of the exhibition. This approach signals a growing institutional willingness to embed restitution and colonial-era debates into public programming, a trend increasingly seen across European museums.
