Museum Kunsthaus Zürich

Kunsthaus Zürich was the most visited art museum in Switzerland in 2023, recording 504,349 visitors. Its supporting association, the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, has over 24,800 members, making it the largest membership-based art association in Europe. Operating costs rose by CHF 583,000 over the previous year, driven primarily by the 2021 Chipperfield expansion, which nearly doubled exhibition space and increased staffing and fixed costs. The museum reported a net deficit of CHF 1.585 million for 2023, contributing to a cumulative negative equity of CHF 4.455 million, partly due to a partial closure from August 2022 to April 2023 after a fire and asbestos remediation, as well as temporary art-storage costs from the expansion delays.

The Signal

The widening deficits underscore the structural challenge of running a doubled facility without sufficient prior cost planning. Board president Philipp Hildebrand acknowledged that the museum was not adequately prepared for the expansion's consequences. Director Ann Demeester, who joined in October 2022, is working with the board and city/state representatives to address operational inefficiencies and eliminate the cumulative deficit by 2028. The museum's funding model is unique in Zurich: 50% public, 50% self-generated. The association holds substantial hidden reserves, including approximately CHF 13 million in unrecorded art acquisitions since 2012, providing a buffer against the negative equity.
