Kunsthaus Zürich Reports 513,162 Visitors in 2024, Reduces Deficit Amid Financial Restructuring
The Facts
The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft held its 130th annual general meeting on May 26, 2025, where members approved the 2024 annual report and financial statements. The Kunsthaus Zürich recorded 513,162 admissions in 2024, remaining Switzerland's most-visited art museum, with strong demand for exhibitions including Wong/van Gogh and Marina Abramović. The annual deficit narrowed slightly to CHF –1,529,489 from CHF –1,585,979 in 2023, roughly 50% better than originally budgeted. Dr. Philipp Hildebrand was re-elected as Chair and Dr. Conrad Ulrich as board member for three-year terms. PricewaterhouseCoopers was reappointed as external auditor.
The Signal
The museum continues to face a structural deficit driven by higher operating costs since opening its extension, including increased personnel and fixed expenses. In October 2024, the Kunstgesellschaft applied for an additional subsidy from the City of Zurich, with a decision expected in summer 2025. A recently announced CHF 30 million endowment from Marianne and Martin Haefner establishes a foundation to fund at least one major international exhibition annually, open to additional donations. The museum aims to balance its budget by 2027 while maintaining its public-private partnership model. New guidelines for collaboration with the Foundation E.G. Bührle Collection have also been agreed.
