Kunsthaus Zürich Reports 513,162 Visitors in 2024, Reduces Deficit Amid Financial Stabilization Push
The Facts
The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft held its 130th annual general meeting on May 26, 2025, approving the 2024 annual report and financial statements. The Kunsthaus Zürich recorded 513,162 admissions in 2024, remaining Switzerland's most-visited art museum, with strong demand for exhibitions including Wong/van Gogh and Marina Abramović. The annual deficit narrowed slightly to CHF –1,529,489 from CHF –1,585,979 in 2023, about 50% better than originally budgeted. Income from ticket sales, rentals, partnerships, and memberships showed a positive trend. Members re-elected Dr. Philipp Hildebrand as Chair and Dr. Conrad Ulrich to the board for three-year terms. PricewaterhouseCoopers was reappointed as external auditor.
The Signal
The structural deficit remains a key challenge, with operating costs rising markedly since the Kunsthaus extension opened, driven by higher personnel expenses and fixed costs. In October 2024, the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft applied for an additional subsidy from the City of Zurich, with a decision expected in summer 2025. The museum aims to balance its budget by 2027 while maintaining its public-private partnership model. A recently announced endowment by Marianne and Martin Haefner, with initial capital of CHF 30 million, establishes a 'Foundation for Major Exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich' to fund at least one major international exhibition annually. The foundation is open to donations from other supporters, signaling a strategic push to grow private income alongside public funding.
