The Facts
Kunsthaus Zürich held its 131st annual general meeting on June 8, 2026, where members approved the 2025 annual report and financial statements. The museum reported over 539,500 visitors in 2025, its second-highest attendance ever, making it the most visited art museum in Switzerland. The annual loss narrowed to CHF 1,425,684 from CHF 1,529,490 the prior year, better than budgeted. The improvement was partly due to a one-time sale of a work from the Carl Sachs collection as part of a restitution agreement with the collector's heirs, with the museum's share allocated to the acquisitions fund in line with ICOM guidelines.
The Signal
The reduced loss marks initial progress in Kunsthaus Zürich's two-year financial stabilization plan, though a structural deficit remains, driven by higher costs for personnel, security, and infrastructure at the expanded facility. A public vote on increased city subsidies is expected in autumn 2026 after the Gemeinderat approved the request in spring 2026. The museum aims to achieve a balanced budget by end 2027. Separately, Dr. Ulrich Sigg was re-elected to the board, and Suzanne Naef Thalmann succeeded Corine Mauch, whose term as Zurich mayor ended May 27, 2026. Member contributions will rise an average of 10% by 2027.
