The Facts

On May 5, 2026, Kunsthaus Zürich announced its annual report for 2025, recording 539,500 visitors—the second-highest total in its history and the highest of any Swiss art museum. A Marina Abramović exhibition drew nearly 120,000 visitors, the museum's most successful show in 12 years. The museum also highlighted free commissions in the Chipperfield building's foyer and garden, including Jeffrey Gibson's installation "boshullichi/inlʋchi – we will continue to change" and Monster Chetwynd's slide-sculpture "Zardoz," which was used over 75,000 times. The private foundation PerArte Stiftung, established by Marianne and Martin Haefner, will support future international exhibitions.

The Signal

The financial results show a net loss of CHF 1.43 million, an improvement from CHF 1.53 million in 2024, though partly due to the one-time sale of a work from the Carl Sachs collection. Ticket revenue rose slightly to CHF 5.59 million, and fundraising increased to CHF 4.85 million. However, the museum has requested higher subsidies from the city of Zurich to cover structural costs from the expanded building. The report signals that even with strong attendance and fundraising, sustained public funding remains essential for operating a major museum in Switzerland.
