Kunsthaus Zürich Reports 539,953 Visitors in 2025, Led by Abramović Retrospective
On January 21, 2026, Kunsthaus Zürich announced that it recorded 539,953 visits in 2025, one of the highest annual totals in its history. The Marina Abramović retrospective drew 118,903 visitors (59,490 in 2025), while the permanent collection attracted 363,588. Free public works—a mural by Jeffrey Gibson in the Haefner Foyer and Monster Chetwynd's slide sculpture 'Zardoz' in the garden—drew significant engagement, with the slide used over 30,000 times since autumn 2025. International visitation grew markedly from the US, the Middle East, and Asia, and redemptions of the Zurich Card more than tripled to 15,915. A survey of 2,477 members, 1,008 representative respondents, and 443 on-site visitors found 92% satisfaction and that 75% of visitors come from the canton of Zurich.
The Signal
The figures underscore Kunsthaus Zürich's dual role as a local anchor and an increasingly international destination. The success of the Abramović blockbuster and the free public art installations demonstrates that high-profile contemporary programming and low-barrier access can coexist to drive attendance. The survey's finding that over 40% of under-35s have visited at least once suggests the museum is successfully cultivating a younger audience. For collectors and curators, the data reinforces the value of investing in both marquee exhibitions and accessible public commissions as strategies for institutional relevance and audience growth.
