Kunsthaus Zürich Reports CHF 1.59M Loss for 2023 After Chipperfield Expansion
The 129th General Assembly of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft on May 27, 2024 approved the 2023 annual report and accounts. Kunsthaus Zürich recorded 504,349 visitors, making it Switzerland's most visited art museum, with top exhibitions including Giacometti – Dalí, Re-Orientations and Käthe Kollwitz/Mona Hatoum; the new Bührle collection presentation drew nearly 23,000 visitors after its November 3 opening. The institution posted a loss of CHF 1,585,979, up from CHF 1,410,285 the prior year, driven by higher operating costs following the near-doubling of exhibition space in the Chipperfield building.
The Signal
The results highlight structural pressures on a major European museum after rapid physical growth, with membership remaining the continent's largest at 24,820. The assembly confirmed board re-elections and new appointments while the director outlined intensified provenance research and fundraising efforts to address ongoing deficits and reposition the institution.
