Kunsthaus Zürich Secures Permanent Loan of Emil Bührle Collection via 2022 Settlement
The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, operator of Kunsthaus Zürich, has entered a settlement agreement with the Stiftung Sammlung E.G. Bührle and the Stifterfamilie covering permanent loan contracts for the Emil Bührle Collection dated 2012 and 2022. The 18-page document details the relocation of the collection to the Kunsthaus, a financing contribution from the donor family, representation of the family in the Kunstgesellschaft, exhibition conditions in the Chipperfield extension building, curatorial oversight, conservation, insurance, publications, and provisions for termination and applicable law. It also addresses provenance research, claims handling, and supplementary acquisitions.
The Signal
The agreement formalizes long-term public access to the Bührle holdings at the expanded Kunsthaus Zürich while clarifying ownership, lending rights, and institutional governance between the foundation, family, and museum operator. For collectors and curators, it signals stable placement of a major private collection within a public institution, with defined protocols for display, research access, and potential future additions that could influence market perceptions of similar Impressionist and modern works.
