Lehmann Maupin Now Represents Todd Gray, Known for Photo Assemblages on Diaspora and Colonialism
The Facts
Lehmann Maupin has announced its representation of artist Todd Gray, who is based between Los Angeles, California and Akwidaa, Ghana. Gray is known for photo assemblages that critically examine ideas of African diaspora, colonialism, societal power structures, and dominant cultural beliefs. In 2023, the gallery presented Gray's first solo exhibition in the United Kingdom at its London space. In December, the artist will debut new works with Lehmann Maupin at Art Basel Miami Beach. Gray will continue to work with David Lewis gallery in New York.
The Signal
Gray's addition to Lehmann Maupin's roster signals the gallery's ongoing commitment to artists who challenge photographic conventions and address historical narratives. His work, which ranges from domestic to monumental scale, fuses disparate visual references and has been featured in major museum exhibitions including the 2019 Whitney Biennial and the Hammer Museum's Made in LA exhibition in 2016. Gray's recent fellowship at the American Academy in Rome as a winner of the 2022-23 Rome Prize further underscores his institutional recognition, making him a compelling addition for collectors focused on conceptually rigorous contemporary photography.
