Lisson Gallery and Absent Gallery to Exchange Spaces in Guangzhou and Shanghai
The Facts
On June 24, 2026, Lisson Gallery and Guangzhou's Absent Gallery announced a reciprocal exchange of their exhibition spaces. From July 12 to August 22, 2026, Lisson will present a special viewing of work from its program at Absent Gallery's Guangzhou venue. Concurrently, from July 25 to September 5, 2026, Absent Gallery will mount a group exhibition featuring five artists at Lisson's Shanghai gallery. The exchange marks a rare cross-city collaboration between two international galleries with a presence in China.
The Signal
The arrangement signals a growing trend of galleries seeking to expand their reach in China through short-term, reciprocal partnerships rather than permanent outposts. For Lisson, which opened its Shanghai space in 2019, the exchange offers direct access to collectors in the Pearl River Delta. For Absent Gallery, it provides a platform in Shanghai's competitive market. The model allows both galleries to test new audiences with minimal overhead, a strategy increasingly adopted as the Chinese art market matures.
