Lisson Gallery: MOCA Cleveland to Present Tishan Hsu Survey 'Permeable Surface'
On July 3, 2026, Lisson Gallery announced that MOCA Cleveland will present 'Tishan Hsu: permeable surface', a career-spanning survey running from August 28, 2026 to March 7, 2027. The exhibition covers over forty years of Hsu's work exploring the human body's relationship with technology, featuring biomorphic forms and industrial materials. Included are Hsu's first and most recent video works: 'Folds of Oil' (2005) and 'emergent mesh' (2025). Hsu studied fine art and architecture, gaining early recognition in the 1980s before working largely outside the public eye for decades.
The Signal
This exhibition marks a significant institutional validation for Hsu, who has maintained a distinctive but relatively low-profile practice for nearly five decades. For collectors, it offers a rare opportunity to see the full arc of his work, from early experiments in digital aesthetics to his latest video piece. The show underscores a growing interest in artists who have long anticipated the merger of technology and the body, a theme increasingly central to contemporary discourse.
