Lisson Gallery Presents New Iteration of Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska's 'Zanzibar'

Lisson Gallery has presented a new iteration of 'Zanzibar' (1999-2023), a collaborative mixed-media installation by Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska, as part of the Lisson Street programme. The work features nine diptychs painted by Himid in 1999, paired with a 38-minute multi-layered “libretto” composed by Stawarska in 2023, exploring themes of memory, movement, loss, and belonging. The installation is on view through 5 September 2026. The presentation was introduced on 5 June through a conversation between the artists and Rosie Cooper, Director of Wysing Arts Centre.

'Zanzibar', first conceived in 1999, gains new resonance through Stawarska's contemporary sound score, offering collectors a layered experience that bridges painting and composition.
