The Facts

Lisson Gallery announced that French contemporary artist Daniel Buren has been invited to create a site-specific installation at the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny, running from July 17 to November 1, 2026. Titled "Plantations, travaux in situ," the new work extends from the museum's gardens into its interior galleries, featuring Buren's signature alternating white and colored vertical bands. The installation is presented alongside a selection of works from the museum's collection, creating a dialogue between the Impressionist heritage of Giverny and contemporary art. Buren, born in 1938, is known for his in situ works that engage with the context of their surroundings, from public commissions to museum interventions.

The Signal

The exhibition coincides with the centenary of Claude Monet's death, building on the Impressionist painters' interest in the changing effects of color and light in nature. While Monet and Gustave Caillebotte captured these effects on canvas, Buren positions his works within the physical space of the landscape and museum, making perception a dynamic, ongoing experience. For collectors and curators, the project underscores a continued institutional interest in integrating contemporary art into historical sites, particularly those tied to the Impressionist movement. Buren's longstanding practice of transforming public and museum spaces with minimal visual tools remains a reference point for site-specific commissions worldwide.
