Liu Xiaodong (born 1963) will present his first exhibition at Lisson Gallery's Los Angeles location, featuring a series of paintings created after a midwinter stay in Detroit. The artist focused his documentation on a single subject for the first time in his career: John Mcintyre, a Detroit-based tattoo artist and member of a local medieval-style fighting team. Xiaodong's canvases depict Mcintyre in full armor during snowy forest battles, as well as at home relaxing in a hot tub, using the figure as a lens through which to portray industrial and suburban Detroit. The announced date is July 30, 2026.
