M+ and the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) have announced a collaborative research exhibition titled 'How Modern: Biographies of Architecture in China 1949–1979,' opening at the CCA’s Main Galleries in Montreal on November 20, 2025. Curated by Shirley Surya and Li Hua, the project examines architectural production and socialist industrialization in China through archival documents, M+ Collection artworks, and newly commissioned films by artist Wang Tuo. The exhibition aims to reframe the three decades between the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the Reform and Opening Up period, challenging existing historical assumptions regarding creative agency and national style.
