The Facts

Mori Art Museum announced on October 23, 2024, that current Chairperson Mori Yoshiko will retire on December 31, 2024, and will be succeeded by Mori Kyoko, a current member of the museum's Board of Trustees, effective January 1, 2025. Mori Yoshiko will continue to support the institution as Chairperson Emerita. The museum, now in its 22nd year, has staged 64 originally-curated exhibitions since opening in 2003 and serves as a cultural symbol of Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.

The Signal

The leadership transition signals a generational shift at one of Tokyo's most prominent contemporary art institutions. Mori Kyoko brings board experience from the Obayashi Foundation and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, suggesting a continued emphasis on cross-sector cultural partnerships. For collectors and curators, the change may reinforce the museum's long-standing commitment to its "Art + Life" philosophy and its role as a bellwether for institutional strategy in Japan's contemporary art scene.
