Musée d'Orsay Acquires Georges de Feure Decorative Panel from 1900 Universal Exhibition
Musée d'Orsay has acquired 'La Verrerie,' a decorative panel by Georges de Feure originally created for the 'L’Art Nouveau Bing' pavilion at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. The panel was donated by galerie Mathieu Néouze through the Société des Amis des Musées d’Orsay et de l’Orangerie (SAMO) in 2023. This acquisition completes a set of three known panels from the pavilion, after two were added to the museum’s collection in 2015. The work is described as a rare, authentic witness to the pavilion’s ephemeral architecture, which marked a decisive moment in French decorative arts.
The Signal
The acquisition brings together the only three surviving panels from the Bing pavilion, strengthening Musée d'Orsay's representation of Art Nouveau decorative arts. It complements the museum's existing holdings from the 1900 Universal Exhibition, including Mucha's decorations for the Bosnia-Herzegovina pavilion. For collectors, the panel's rarity and documented provenance from a landmark pavilion underscore the enduring market for Art Nouveau works with exhibition history.
