The Facts

Musée d'Orsay has featured Max Klinger's bronze bust 'Cassandre', created circa 1893, in its collection. The sculpture depicts the Trojan princess Cassandra, who was cursed by Apollo to never be believed. Klinger set fiery cornelian eyes into the dark bronze to suggest her anguish and prophetic visions. The bust, measuring 58.5 cm in height, was acquired by the museum in 1990.

The Signal

Klinger's 'Cassandre' exemplifies the Symbolist movement, which emerged in the 1880s and spread across Europe. The artist often explored the theme of the femme fatale and used unexpected materials and fragmented forms. The work is not currently on view but remains a significant example of late 19th-century German sculpture in the museum's holdings.
