Musée d'Orsay Launches AI Chatbot 'Hello Vincent' for Van Gogh Exhibition
The Facts
Musée d'Orsay has introduced an artificial intelligence application called 'Hello Vincent' that allows visitors to converse with a digital version of Vincent van Gogh. Developed by startup Jumbo Mana in collaboration with art historian Dr. Wouter van der Veen, the generative AI draws on a corpus of some 900 letters written by the artist. The interactive terminal, located at the exit of the 'Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise' exhibition, uses a microphone to enable one-on-one conversation with the painter as he is depicted painting his famous 'Wheatfield with Crows'. The project was funded by BPI France and the Grand-Est region, with support from the University of Paris-Saclay and the Institute for Development and Resources in Intensive Scientific Computing (IDRIS), which provided access to the Jean-Zay supercomputer.
The Signal
The 'Hello Vincent' experience represents a novel application of generative AI in a museum setting, blending academic research with public engagement. By making the AI freely available in open access, the Musée d'Orsay signals a growing interest in interactive, educational technologies that personalize the visitor experience. The partnership between a major cultural institution and a tech startup, backed by public funding, may serve as a model for other museums seeking to integrate AI-driven tools into their exhibitions, particularly for historical figures with extensive written archives.
