The Facts

The Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) has opened 'Robert Rauschenberg’s ‘New York: Pictures from the Real World’', an exhibition centered on the artist's photographs of his adopted hometown. The show features works from Rauschenberg's 'In + Out City Limits' project, a three-year survey (1979–81) across the United States that captured his fascination with urban signs and symbols. The exhibition celebrates what would have been Rauschenberg's 100th birthday at the end of October.

The Signal

The exhibition highlights Rauschenberg's ambitious, idealistic approach to art, exemplified by his Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange (ROCI) project, launched at the United Nations in 1984. ROCI aimed to promote world peace by transporting art to politically sensitive regions, avoiding traditional European art centers. This centenary show underscores Rauschenberg's enduring legacy as an artist who used photography and collaboration to bridge cultural divides, offering collectors and curators insight into his foundational New York works and his global vision.
