Georg Baselitz, Influential German Painter, Dies at 88; Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery Announces Exhibition

Georg Baselitz (1938–2026), the German painter and sculptor whose upside-down motifs and provocative political themes reshaped European art after World War II, has died. The gallery Thaddaeus Ropac, which represented him, announced the news alongside a new exhibition at Gl. Holtegaard in Denmark. The show focuses on Baselitz’s late, lesser-known works, including paintings and sculptures that demonstrate his continued experimentation. Baselitz was represented at Documenta in 1972 and 1982, and at biennials in São Paulo (1975), Venice (1980), and Beijing (2003). Major retrospectives were held at the Guggenheim Museum New York, Royal Academy of Arts London, Fondation Beyeler Basel, and Centre Pompidou Paris. In 2015, he received a special presentation at the Venice Biennale and became the first living artist to exhibit at the Galleria dell’Accademia di Venezia.

Baselitz's death closes a chapter on a generation that used figuration to confront Germany's past; his market will now face its first major test.
